What You Need

  • Rubber gloves and closed shoes.
  • Eye protection if you use a pressure washer or a strong product.
  • A long-handled scrubbing brush.
  • A bucket, and a garden hose or pressure washer.
  • Dishwashing liquid.
  • One household disinfectant, used as the label directs.

Product Safety

  • Read the label for dilution, contact time and protective equipment, and follow it.
  • Never mix cleaning chemicals. Bleach mixed with ammonia or acid-based cleaners can release toxic gas.
  • Use one product at a time and rinse between products.
  • Keep children and pets away while you clean.
  • Wash your hands when you are done.

Step by Step

  1. Wait for collection. Clean the bin when it has just been emptied.
  2. Choose the spot. Work on your own property, on a patch of lawn or gravel where water soaks into the ground, away from the street gutter and stormwater drains.
  3. Remove loose waste. Tip out leftovers and scrape stuck waste into a bag for the next collection.
  4. Pre-soak. Add a bucket of warm water with dishwashing liquid, close the lid and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Scrub. Scrub the bottom, sides, rim, lid, hinge and handle with the long-handled brush.
  6. Rinse. Rinse with the hose or pressure washer and pour the dirty water away as described below.
  7. Disinfect. Apply one disinfectant at the dilution and contact time on its label.
  8. Final rinse. Rinse again if the label says so.
  9. Dry. Leave the bin upside down or open in the sun until it is completely dry.
  10. Clean up. Rinse the brush and gloves, and wash your hands.

Handling the Dirty Water

Bin water carries food waste, bacteria and cleaning products. Never pour it into a stormwater drain, the street gutter or the road: stormwater is not treated and flows to rivers and the sea. Pour small amounts down a toilet or an outside gully connected to the sewer, or onto a soak-away patch on your property away from vegetable beds and water features. Check your municipality's by-laws if you are unsure.

Keeping the Bin Cleaner

  • Bag and tie food waste.
  • Wrap meat, fish and bones, and keep them in the freezer until collection day.
  • Keep the lid closed.
  • Drain liquids before they go in the bin.
  • Stand the bin in the shade if you can.
  • Rinse it out after any leak.

If you already have maggots, follow the maggots in bins guide.

When a Professional Clean Makes Sense

If the bin is badly soiled, you have several bins, or you would rather not handle it, a once-off bin cleaning visit or a residential bin cleaning package takes it off your hands.

Wheelie Bin Cleaning FAQs

How often should a wheelie bin be cleaned?

Every two to four weeks for most households, more often in summer or if you throw away a lot of food waste.

Can I use bleach?

Yes, diluted as the label directs. Never mix it with other cleaners, especially ammonia or acid-based products, and rinse well.

Are vinegar and bicarbonate of soda enough?

They help loosen dirt and reduce odours. They are not a substitute for a disinfectant used as labelled.

Can I use a pressure washer?

Yes. Wear eye protection and closed shoes, and keep the spray away from people, pets and windows.

Where should the dirty water go?

Into the sewer, for example a toilet, or onto a soak-away on your property. Never into a stormwater drain or the street gutter.
