Leaderr approved Maggots in Bins - a cleaner in a black uniform washing out a wheelie bin with a pressure washer on a South African driveway

Maggots in Bins are fly larvae. Flies lay eggs on food waste and liquids in the bin, and in warm weather the eggs can hatch within a day. This guide covers why they appear, how to remove them safely and how to make them less likely.

Why Maggots Appear

  • Food waste, especially meat, fish and bones, left unwrapped.
  • A lid left open or one that does not close properly.
  • Bags that leak and leave liquid at the bottom.
  • A bin standing in full sun.
  • Long gaps between collections, or a missed collection.

How to Remove Maggots Safely

  1. Protect yourself. Wear rubber gloves and closed shoes.
  2. Empty the bin. Wait for collection, or bag and tie the remaining waste.
  3. Kill the maggots. Carefully pour boiling water over them, avoiding splashes.
  4. Remove them. Scrape out the dead maggots and residue and bag them.
  5. Wash. Scrub the bin with hot soapy water, including the rim and lid.
  6. Disinfect. Use one disinfectant as the label directs. Never mix chemicals.
  7. Dry. Leave the bin open in the sun until dry.
  8. Dispose of the water. Into the sewer, never into a stormwater drain or the street gutter.

The how to clean a wheelie bin guide covers washing and wastewater in more detail.

Prevention

  • Keep the lid closed at all times.
  • Wrap food waste and tie bags tightly.
  • Freeze meat and fish scraps until collection day.
  • Drain liquids before they go in the bin.
  • Rinse the bin regularly, especially in summer.
  • Keep the bin in the shade.
  • Report a broken municipal bin or lid to your municipality.

No cleaning method permanently prevents flies or maggots. Regular cleaning, closed lids and wrapped food waste make them less likely.

When Professional Cleaning May Help

  • Maggots keep coming back despite your efforts.
  • You have several bins or large shared bins.
  • You would rather not deal with it yourself.
  • Summer, when flies breed fastest.

A once-off bin cleaning visit deals with an existing problem. A residential bin cleaning package, or complex bin cleaning for shared bins, keeps bins cleaner afterwards.

Maggots in Bins FAQs

Are maggots in a bin dangerous?

They show that food waste is rotting and attracting flies. Avoid touching them, wear gloves when cleaning and wash your hands afterwards.

Will bleach kill maggots?

Boiling water and a thorough wash are usually enough. If you use bleach, dilute it as the label directs and never mix it with other products.

Why do maggots keep coming back?

Flies return to food waste. Wrap scraps, keep the lid closed and clean the bin regularly.

Does professional cleaning stop maggots for good?

No. Cleaning removes them and makes them less likely, but flies can return if food waste is exposed.

Should I spray insecticide in the bin?

Only a product labelled for that use, applied exactly as directed. Most people do not need it.
